    This year marks the centenary of the birth of Pedro Arrupe, the Basque Jesuit who worked in Japan and later became the Jesuits' Superior General. He was present at Hiroshima on 6 August 6 1945, the day on which the atomic bomb was dropped.

From 1989 to 1996 he was Director of the East Asian Pastoral Institute, Manila. At the 34th General Congregation of the Jesuits (1995) he chaired the commission that undertook the first formal revision since the sixteenth century of the Jesuit Constitutions.
