    He is out there, a fellow water man, in the real dark, in the blue-black ink. I am just here in the shallows, for I am not a swimmer. I can neither see him nor hear him but know he is there because his bike and his clothes are in their usual spot by the footpath.

    Canberra's bad weather has its benefits: Brisbane was Australia's capital, we might be living in a banana republic whose despotic ruling family would never want to relinquish their grip on leisure governance. The best thing about hating Canberra is that it discourages nationalism.

    Last week the BRW Young Rich List appeared. Judging by the profiles that go with lists, listed people are a boring lot. They tend to take seriously activities that don't contribute much to human happiness. Many of the wealthy young made nothing, except a pile of money through property and hedge funds.

    It's serious business cycling in Sydney. Cyclists tell of cycleways that suddenly finish, and recently, when one cyclist was hit by a car, instead of checking on his injuries, the driver got out and abused him. In Sydney, the car dominates.
