    Nationalism is the scourge of the modern Olympics. We slide too easily from speaking of 'how our athletes are doing' to 'how we are doing'. We should consider discontinuing national anthems and medal tallies and even introduce a fixed host city.

If it dented her confidence, Jones may have taken strength from Australia's first ever international sports champion.

We give lip service to female equality, but women will still be exploited whenever the opportunity arises, and feminists vilified like it's 1972.

    The modern Olympic torch relay was initiated by the Nazi leadership in 1936 to uphold the image of the Third Reich as a dynamic and expanding influence. Those who extinguished the Beijing torch in protest against human rights violations in Tibet recognise its origins and potency as a political symbol. (April 2008)
