The Coalition's new asylum seeker policy returns to the policy it put into practice under Mr Howard, adding new nasties. The Government's asylum seeker policy is bad; the Coalition's is worse. It is designed to appeal to human baseness, not to human generosity.

The decision to suspend the processing of future asylum seekers from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka does not respect the dignity of asylum seekers. Now that the Government has bent to the populist winds fanned by an opportunistic Opposition, there are grounds for fearing the claims of asylum seekers will be judged in a way that unduly reflects the interests of the Australian Government.

reality of those who seek asylum, not by convenience of
those on whom they make a claim.

A hysterical response to the arrival of boats in Australia could undo
the progress we have made away from unjust policy. Most asylum seekers
have already experienced serious trauma. To return to a temporary visa
regime will separate families for years and cause anxiety.

Yesterday's announcement of the Government's policy shift away from indefinite detention of asylum seekers brings Australia closer to UNHCR recommendations. It remains to be seen if it will have the courage of its convictions if more boats do arrive.

ALP Immigration Policy includes both change and continuity. It gives more priority to teaching English over testing, but there's still too much reliance on ministerial discretion rather than the judicial system.
