    Imagine the same man, rather than consumed by hate, alert instead to humour, to the power of mercy, apology, simplicity, conversation, common ground. Imagine what he might have done for the religion he loved, to which he instead did more damage than anyone else in history.

    Here, al-Baghdadi seemed to reprise a previous villainous role: that played by Osama bin Laden, the recognisable face of Al-Qaeda. It was similar in another respect: slaying the symbolic head might provide some form of catharsis, but it would hardly redress the logistic realities on the ground.

    The saturation coverage of the assassination of Osama bin Laden helped the cause of anti-religionists such as the New Atheists, who make blanket denunciations of religion. Theologian Peter Vardy says it’s not enough for believers to shine the light on good religion. They must denounce bad religion as well.
