The Church of the 21st century should be the exemplar of due process, natural justice and transparency. I am bemused that whenever I agitate questions of Aboriginal and refugee rights I am well received by liberals, who then question my clerical entitlement to speak when I buy into debates on issues like euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research. On same sex marriage, I am attacked from both sides.

    Conversation with a gay priest

    • Peter Kirkwood
    • 06 May 2011

Allison argues recent scientific revelations about homosexuality are part of the unfolding natural law that challenges negative attitudes and beliefs regarding it, and the basis for official Church teaching, that being gay is 'an objective disorder'.

    Anglicans and Catholics

Predictions that massive numbers of Anglicans will become Catholic seem far-fetched. Certainly, the Anglican communion is sharply divided by proposals to ordain women Bishops and to ordain as Bishops men in openly homosexual relationships. But only some of those opposed would feel any attraction to Rome.

May I tell you about one refugee whom I met during the 20 years I lived and worked JRS? The story has no happy outcome, indeed far from it. But it may help to communicate some of the feelings that inspire many who accompany the refugees.

Where to now for Anglicans and Rome

If the Apostolic Constitution is phrased in overly-confident 'Romanista' style it will communicate a bureaucratic message and reinforce the suspicion that 'ecumenical endeavour' means 'return to Rome', rather than the vision of every Christian tradition being converted to unity.

    Dialogue with Rowan Williams

The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams offers a view of dialogue that transcends merely passing information on to a passive listener. True dialogue changes the speaker as much as it does the hearer, and poses a model for better understanding God.

Say g'day to ease Muslim-Christian tensions

Christians committed to interfaith dialogue were shocked that some Christian leaders have opposed the building of an Islamic school in Sydney. Rather than welcoming the newcomers, leaders' statements will bolster opposition based on fear and ignorance.

    The gospel according to Dostoevsky

That Dostoevsky is said to have developed a 'theology of writing' does not mean he arrives forearmed with a set of dogmatic truths. Rather, he practises the narrative and spritual discipline of allowing each character to be heard.

Manny, terrified and bewildered, clutches a crucifix and prays, while lawyers spew jargon-laden bile at one another. It might seem strange to invoke a Hitchcock film at Easter, but we can see a similar horror at work in the trial of Jesus.

    Human rights without God

Professor Martha Nussbaum's recent book Liberty of Conscience provides a rich textured treatment of the place of religion in the public square. If God is taken out of the picture, it may be difficult to maintain a human rights commitment to the weakest and most despised in society.
