Cardinal Pell does not underscore his climate change denial with theological justification, as he does with his position on issues such as human cloning. It is unfair to him, and to the Catholic Church, to assume that his personal views on climate change represent Church teaching.

We think it is wrong for foreign states to impose the death penalty on Aussie drug traffickers and drug mules. But we apply different reasoning to non-Australians facing death at the hands of the state. The practical, hands on, Aussie approach often plays fast and loose with moral reasoning about what is right and wrong.

The largely Protestant World Council of Churches reacted favourably to this week's perceived "one true Church" declaration by the Roman Catholic Church, calling it an honest sharing of divergences that helps the cause of unity. There are lessons for the Federal Government, which should declare its alleged Northern Territory "land grab" to be such, and in the national interest.

Following earlier scepticism, Pope Benedict XVI last week confirmed that he is coming to Sydney for World Youth Day next July. Unlike his predecessor, he doesn't see himself as ‘bishop of the world’. Instead he has reasserted the traditional pastoral role of the pope as Bishop of Rome.

The Prime Minister attended the funeral of Jake Kovco, the first Australian casualty in Iraq. However, he did not attend that of Mark Bingley, a Blackhawk captain who died whilst on duty in Fiji. Absences are not simple events. They often make political statements.
