Reports regarding Mary MacKillop's miracles have provoked the ire of those who see miracles as evidence of the irrational character of religious faith. Another angle on this debate may be found in an apparent oddity in the processes of saint making.

The blizzards of bills, the surly son, the dismissive daughter, the shabby house, the battered car, the shivering pains, the dark thread of fear that I might not have been a good dad, the feeling sometimes that maybe there was a better husband for my wife ...

Hillary Clinton worked hard on a three day charm offensive encouraging Pakistanis to engage in a new trusting relationship with the US. But Pakistanis cannot trust themselves at the moment, let alone the world superpower which has funded Taliban militants.

The one thing more potent than the anticipation of seeing your team in a grand final is the misery of seeing them defeated. A wet, bedraggled lamb glimpsed en route to Melbourne proved to be an ill omen for one footy fan.

ABC's mainstream religion tested, found wanting

    • Paul Collins

Since the axing of The Religion Report, mainstream ABC news and current affairs programs have missed a range of important religious topics and events. It seems unlikely that General Manager Mark Scott will be able to maintain religion as a viable reality on the ABC.

Ignoring divisions is rarely the best way to address them. It may be better to name 2009 the year of priests, not the Year of the Priest, thus recognising the divergent approaches to priesthood within the Catholic Church.

Inside this darkened church there are whispers ... a clutter of saints who cross themselves in stony silence .. Time and time again, Christ's palms do not heal.

Kennedy is not portrayed as a saint. Imperfections such as his unpredictable temper, his occasional liking for a drink and his initial insensitivity to Aboriginal Australians reveal that he, like us, was a man of flesh and blood.

The 'bad eggs' of Ireland's abuse scandal

After a lifetime in schools run by religious orders, I am appalled to think abuse against children in institutions in Ireland was 'endemic'. I try to persuade myself that 'Brendan', the saintliest man I ever knew, cancels out the bad eggs.
