    Malcolm Turnbull recently compared Kevin Rudd to the Shakespearean character Coriolanus, a reviled control freak. Politicians sometimes invoke Shakespeare to flatter their own cause. But this is fraught with dangers: they can come off sounding pompous, or their analogies may backfire.

    Toy Story 3's vision of heaven and hell

    The toys are brought to a landfill, where they are dragged towards an incinerator, a fiery pit equivalent to any vision of Hell confected by Dante. It's harrowing stuff for an animated feature, but you can never tell what the toys find more threatening: death itself or the despair of becoming obsolete.

    When Switzerland scored with a crazy goal against the heavily favoured Spain, I could almost hear my father leaping from the couch and cheering. Before he died, he was a football fanatic. I have learned to love it. It's my way of communing with him.
