Many of those present at the weekend's 2020 Summit struggled with understanding the difference between ideas, policies, visions, aspirations and general directions. The more hard-headed were probably disappointed, just as the others were obviously delighted by the vision statements.

The Rudd Government is consulting and working out what to do about the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The symbolism of reversing Australia's vote against the Declaration would need to be matched by more work in partnership with indigenous Australians.

He is a sociologist, poet and social justice advocate and was national CEO of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia from 2006 to 2018. He is a member of the Australian Services Union.
