    Eureka Street named Publication of the Year at 2021 ARPA Awards

    Eureka Street was named Publication of the Year at the 2021 Australasian Religious Press Association Awards, with the judges citing its 'authenticity of voice and fidelity to the Gospel'. They said Eureka Street was 'grounded in the social teachings of the Catholic Church, it addresses issues both national and international, and gives readers access to some of Australia's best public intellectuals.'

    To describe events as mythical is always open to misunderstanding, because in common speech myth is opposed to reality. When mythical stories are seen as unreal, the deep significance they have for individuals and groups also comes into question. So a hostile response is to be expected.

    Monster in the car park

    The car park is a concrete cave, a holding cell, a sarcophagus. From the outside, it looks like other buildings, but inside, there are darker, deeper modalities. I wind down to sub level four. Free spaces, empty rows: I savour the desolate and bare space. 'Hey you,' shouts someone from up ahead. A man, in well-groomed suit pants with a snappy vest, strides towards me. I glance around at level four. There are almost no cars to be seen.

    In Australia, September is the month of religious media conferences. This year church media, particularly Catholic media, face a growing challenge: how to deal with bad news about the Church, especially stories regarding sexual abuse and failures of governance. Pope Francis' own style of communication suggests an alternative purpose and approach that such media might adopt.

    Brian Matthews writes the By the Way column for Eureka Street. Brian is honorary Professor of English at Flinders University, Adelaide where he taught for 25 years and was awarded Flinders' first Personal Chair in English. He was Fulbright Scholar in Residence at the University of Oregon, 1986, and subsequently held visiting professorships at the universities of Trento, Venice and Bologna. He was head of the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies and professor of Australian studies at the University of London, 1993–96. In 1997 he became foundation director of the Europe Australia Institute at Victoria University, Melbourne.
