This is undoubtedly a major transition from the heavy regulated existence not that long ago when the collective good outweighed individualism. Juxtaposed with this ‘forging forth’ expectation is the significant, if not alarming, increase in infection rates.

    In the 1970s the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the mental health 'bible', listed homosexuality as a mental illness. Many disagreed, and so in the stroke of an editorial pen hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, were cured. The DSM is a socially constructed manual, put together by those with a vested interest in mental health.

    When I was 15 I decided not to kill myself. I am still sometimes prone to baseless bouts of depression, but that ragged dark hole has never engulfed me. The main characters in two recent films are notable for deciding to live, rather than lie down and be overrun by dark emotions and events.

    The oldest of our five, Ben studied science, medicine in his sights, healthy, not wealthy and wise beyond his years. Ben died quietly. He had no choice really, we turned off the machine.

    Mental illness has always been with us. Hippocrates attached melancholia to an excess of black bile. Christ cast out demons from the afflicted. My sister suicided after years of suffering, undiagnosed because of fear of stigma.
