    Especially around Christmas, we Hugheses tend to get weird about playlists. What music do you want streaming through the house anyway? You can get anything at all on YouTube and Spotify these days. My family members, like me, have always been a tad defensive about playlists although there are a few items we all like. But these are over far too soon, and then the arguments begin about whose taste is more execrable.

    Unfortunately, when people pin their hopes for a just and fair society to a corporation, they can be sadly disappointed. A spate of deaths around the country suggests that many corporations have plenty of power to influence governments to produce policies and legislation convenient for their operations, but fail to take responsibility for their bad outcomes, which include deaths in workplaces.

    Sleep was not in two-year-old Laura's holiday plans: she inhabited several time zones, none of them ours. One night, at 11, when she was getting revved up for another two hours of play, I decided to take her to the shops. I should mention that Laura has Down syndrome.

    At Midnight Mass and blissed-out on the music playing on his Walkman, the newly atheist Zac daydreams that he’s floating up to the rafters, taking flight as the congregation below 'ooh-oohs' to the refrain of the Stones’ 'Sympathy For the Devil'. More than escapism, the scene reflects Zac’s unconscious desire to transcend the natural order of his world.
