The social and environmental benefits would also flow to all of us in building healthier, more resilient communities and significantly reducing pollution.

A more sensible alternative to austerity is for governments, business, unions and charities to look for ways we can together soften the impact of any global downturn. We need to change the language from improving 'attendance' to improving 'engagement' — to reflect that schools need to be places of learning for Indigenous children, not just minding centres, and that learning comes with engagement.

My family migrated to Australia when I was young and so I enjoyed the privilege of growing up without the war and discrimination that has marred my birth land, although there is a different type of discrimination that I have had to face being an Asian in Australia. In being here though I know I am living on stolen land.
