When chief film critic for The New York Times left his dream job after 23 years, he blamed the lack of original and imaginative work in an industry dominated by conglomerates. While many are lamenting the state of film, the question remains: what does it mean for an art form to diminish?

Pete Docter was inspired to tell this story after observing changes in his preteen daughter's personality. His research included consultation with psychologists specialising in emotion, including University of California professor Dacher Keltner, whose insights included the role of sadness in strengthening relationships. The story is an exploration on the effects on children of loss and change, and the role of pain.
As a parent of a boy, I was concerned by Thomas' experiences doing 'sexual ethics theatre performances'. She recounts negative responses from teenage boys to one scenario dealing with pubic hair — the lads assuming that 'any girl with pubes would be so self-conscious about them that she'd avoid sex altogether', and that malekind is disgusted by non-exfoliated women.
The toys are brought to a landfill, where they are dragged towards an incinerator, a fiery pit equivalent to any vision of Hell confected by Dante. It's harrowing stuff for an animated feature, but you can never tell what the toys find more threatening: death itself or the despair of becoming obsolete.
