I recall a cartoon from the early days of the Abbott Government. Tony in his budgie smugglers is pinning a note to the Cabinet Room door stating “Ladies, bring a plate”. When told by Joe Hockey that the sign is not appropriate, Tony agrees and changes “Ladies” to “Lady”. At least there is more than one these days. Now to work on the attitude…

Lasciate ogni speranza, voi qu'entrate. Even more relevant is Dante's preceding iambic pentameter: "Per me se va tra la perduta gente." "Through me one goes among the lost people." The long lost "Liberal Party" was founded as the U.A.P. in a secret meeting in Melbourne's National Mutual Building, by a Rightest cabal, with turncoat Joseph Lyons its invited figurehead, Robert Menzies its Eminence Grise. Liberals, Nationals, "la perduta gente" lost to humane values, lost to caring for humanity and for nature; their women, like their men, acolytes of Mammon.
