    Amid the noise of Batman battling Superman, the Avengers turning against each other, and middle aged fanboys whingeing about the Ghostbusters franchise being revitalised with an all-female lead cast, 2016 has actually been a pretty solid year for movies, both in and outside of Hollywood. Since his birth in 1957, his life history has moulded him, and given him the courage to speak up for a reformed China. And while he might appear the court jester that a simplistic West wants, he is in fact a clever and pragmatic political operator in his own world pursuing a rights agenda in a systematic, constructive and humorous way, often through artistic production.

    When Fr Julian Tenison Woods was no longer welcome in the south, he came and conducted scientific expeditions and parish missions in Queensland. In 1881, he conducted a parish mission in Maryborough, where he got Martin Brennan, my great-grandfather, off the grog and back to church.
