    When I appeared on Q&A with Christopher Hitchens, a young man asked whether we can 'ever hope to live in a truly secular society' while the religious continue to 'affect political discourse and decision making' on euthanasia, same-sex unions and abortion. Hitchens was simpaticao. I was dumbstruck.

    The fact that we are 'discussing' more than ever before due to the internet and the blogosphere, does not prove that our democracy is in better shape. The environment precludes reasoning because reasoning requires a willingness to listen to the other and to approach questions through mutual respect.

    Amartya Sen suggests we might never know what perfect justice is, but we certainly know injustice when we see it. Instead of giving a tired rehash of Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau, Sen uses vibrant, colourful examples from history, philosophy, and literature, in particular from the Indian tradition.
