    Someone yells a racial slur at you while you were just trying to do your job. Then you get booed for months for publicly celebrating your cultural heritage. You might think, how can anyone say this is okay? With the evidence brought to light, how can it be denied or, worse, condoned? But the truth is that siding with the bully or perpetrator is psychologically far easier for your average self-serving person.

    I have heard colleagues refer to decisions as 'retarded', personalities as 'on the [autism] spectrum', and behaviour as 'OCD'. I hoped my silence would express my disapproval. Far from mere 'political correctness', seeking to eliminate such terms from discourse is a natural extension of a respectful and inclusive society.

    Go to seek.com.au and enter the keywords 'Dynamic, Young, Funky'. You will have before you about 24 job ads. Exclude the word 'Funky' and it rises to 300-400. Ads should focus on the skills, competencies and capabilities of the position rather than the applicant's age.

    Michael Gill, former editor in chief of the Australian Financial Review, is suing his former employer Fairfax for age discrimination. I will be praying that the provisions prohibiting age discrimination in equal opportunity laws around Australia are exposed for the pathetic non-protections that they truly are.

    As a child of migrant parents, I was taught to respect my elders, to view each wrinkle as the mark of wisdom and a full head of silvery hair as the ultimate badge of honour. I wonder how those in their twilight years feel about young celebrities dying their hair grey in the name of fashion?
